The TEC1-12703 Thermoelectric Cooler Peltier Module operates on the principles of the Peltier Thermoelectric Effect and consists of 127 semiconductor couples within a 30mm x 30mm area. Commonly referred to as TECs or Peltier modules, these devices create a temperature difference across their surfaces; one side becomes hot while the other becomes cool. This allows them to either heat or cool an object, depending on the side used, and they can also generate electricity from the temperature differential.
This Peltier module functions effectively as long as the heat is dissipated from the hot side. Upon activation, the hot side heats up quickly while the cold side cools down rapidly. If the heat from the hot side is not removed—using a heat sink or similar device—the Peltier will reach a state of stasis and cease to function effectively. It is advisable to use an old computer CPU heatsink or another metal block to draw heat away from the hot side. In our testing, we were able to achieve such significant cooling on the cold side that it became uncomfortable to touch.
