The formula

pF = (first two digits) x 10^(third digit)

104  ->  10 x 10^4 pF  =  100000 pF  =  100 nF  =  0.1 uF

Tolerance letter:
J = 5%,  K = 10%,  M = 20%

How it works

The first two digits are the value, the third is how many zeros to add, and the result is in picofarads. It is the same scheme as the resistor colour code, written in numbers because a ceramic disc is too small for bands.

The confusion is almost always the units. 104 is 100000 pF, which nobody writes — it is 100 nF, and the same part is sold as 0.1 uF. All three are the identical capacitor.

Codes below 100 are already in picofarads: 47 means 47 pF, not 47 with zeros after it.
