The formula

Rtotal = R1 + R2 + R3 + ...

How it works

The same current passes through every resistor in the chain, and the voltage divides between them in proportion to their resistance.

Series is how you reach a value you do not stock: 1k plus 200 gives 1.2k. It is also how tolerance stacks — three 5% parts in series give a total whose worst case is still 5%, so nothing is lost by combining them.
